“Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.”
Revelation 1:7
The Second Coming of Jesus Christ refers to His future return to earth in power and glory. This significant event will mark the fulfilment of God’s divine plan, as Christ comes to judge the world, defeat evil, and establish His eternal kingdom. It will be a visible and triumphant manifestation of His authority over all creation. Christ’s return will mark the end of the current age and beginning of the new, perfect order under His rule.
HE IS COMING WITH CLOUDS
The Second Coming will be a literal and visible event, and every eye will witness Christ’s return. It will be just like Christ’s ascension into heaven as described in Acts 1:9-11. Jesus was lifted up into a cloud while the disciples watched, and within a short period of time they could no longer see Him. As they gazed intently into the sky, two men in white robes appeared and said, “Men of Galilee, why are you standing here looking up at the sky? Jesus has been taken into heaven, but He will return in the same manner as you saw Him leave.”
The Son of Man will appear with the clouds, full of power and glory. When Jesus was on trial, the high priest asked if He was the Messiah, and Jesus responded, “You have said it. And in the future, you will see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at God’s right hand and coming on the clouds of heaven” (Matt 26:64). His return will be marked by majesty and power, as He comes to fulfil the promises of His Word.
ALL TRIBES WILL MOURN
When Christ returns, humanity will face the reality of their sins and the consequences of rejecting Him. Every tribe will mourn as they recognise their sin and guilt. Zechariah 12:10 speaks of the deep mourning in Jerusalem when they finally see the One they have pierced. The mourning signifies the sorrow of those who rejected Christ and must now face His judgement. For those who have not accepted Him, His return will bring fear and sorrow, as they will be unprepared (Matt 24:30). The Day of the Lord will be one of judgement for the world, but also one of justice and truth.
THE DAY OF HIS RETURN
The Lord Jesus Christ is coming back, however no one knows the exact day or hour of His return— not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father (Mark 13:32). The Father alone has the authority over the appointed dates and times, which are not for us to know. Therefore, we must always be prepared for His return, which will be sudden and unexpected. We are called to remain watchful, prayerful and patient, just like the farmer who waits for the precious fruit of the earth to ripen (Jam 5:7).
As we look forward to Christ’s return, we are encouraged to be watchful and steadfast in our faith. His Second Coming will bring both judgement and restoration, and we are called to remain in fellowship with Christ. By doing so, we can stand confidently before Him on that day, without shame or fear (1 John 2:28). It is important for us to know about the Second Coming so that we will not be deceived.
