THE ASSURANCE OF GOD’S PROMISES IN CHRIST

God’s promises

“For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.”

‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭1‬:‭20‬ ‭

In a world where promises are often broken, it can be difficult to know what or who to trust. As the world around us changes rapidly and disappointments are frequent, the Bible offers a reassuring certainty—a guarantee that God’s promises are fulfilled in Jesus Christ. Through Him, every promise of God is a firm “yes” and “amen,” meaning that God’s promises are not only assured but also fully confirmed in Him.

THE PROMISES OF GOD ARE YES AND AMEN

God’s promises are not merely empty words or vague hopes but are assuredly “yes” in Christ (Isa 55:11). In other words, Christ embodies the confirmation and fulfilment of every divine promise recorded in the Bible. When believers say “amen” to God’s promises, we are expressing our agreement and trust in God’s faithfulness. The word “amen” itself, translated as “so let it be,” signifies a firm and confident declaration. This highlights the believer’s acknowledgment that God’s promises are true and certain. They are all guaranteed in Jesus Christ, both in the present and in the future.

It is important that we approach the promises of God with discernment. Not every desire or affirmation we hold is a promise from God. Biblical promises are those that are explicitly stated in the scriptures, reflecting God’s will and purposes. To confuse these with our personal aspirations or expectations can lead to misunderstanding and disappointment. The Bible is the authoritative Word of God that guides our understanding of what God has truly promised. When we align our desires with God’s Word, we avoid the common pitfall of misapplying the scriptures to suit personal agendas.

TRUSTING IN HIS PROMISES

A promise is only as reliable as the person who makes it. God is reliable and trustworthy, so we can be sure that His promises will be fulfilled. In Christ, every promise of God is confirmed and guaranteed. We can trust God’s Word because it is true and unchanging. He is consistent in His nature and in keeping His promises. As the psalmist states, “For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast” (Psa 33:9).

When we pray based on God’s promises that are revealed in the Bible, we can do so with confidence. This is exactly what Apostle John meant when he wrote, “Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him” (1 John 5:14–15). This assures us that God hears our prayers when they align with His will. We are able to approach Him with confidence and expectant faith, trusting that He will fulfil His promises.

Second Corinthians 1:20 reveals the reliability and certainty of God’s promises, which find their ultimate fulfilment in Jesus Christ. They are all secure in Christ, and our response of “amen” declares our trust in God’s truthfulness and faithfulness. May we live in a way that reflects our confidence in God, who never fails to fulfil His promises.
