HOW ORDINARY MEN IN THE BIBLE WALKED WITH GOD

Walking with God

“Blessed are people of integrity, who follow the instructions of the Lord. Blessed are those who obey his laws and search for him with all their hearts. They do not compromise with evil, and they walk only in his paths.”

‭‭Psalms‬ ‭119‬:‭1‬-‭3‬ ‭

Walking with God involves a life of close fellowship with the Lord, marked by faith, obedience and righteousness. Throughout the Bible, we see examples of men and women who walked with God, each demonstrating how to live in alignment with God’s will and experience His blessings. Let’s look at how four ordinary men walked with God and the blessings they received.

NOAH— THE RIGHTEOUS MAN WHO FEARED GOD

Noah walked with God by living a life of righteousness and blamelessness in a corrupt world. He demonstrated faith and obedience to God’s commands by building the ark exactly as he was instructed, which led to the preservation of his family and his generation (Gen 6:22; Heb 11:7). He maintained fellowship with God through consistent prayer and stood firm in his faith despite the wickedness around him. Noah’s testimony shows that following God’s statutes and seeking Him leads to divine blessing and deliverance. God established a covenant with Noah that He will never flood the earth again (Gen 9:1-17).

ABRAHAM— THE MAN WHO BELIEVED GOD AGAINST ALL ODDS

Abraham walked with God by believing His promises and obeying His commands. He left his homeland by faith not knowing where he was going. He trusted God for a son in his old age, and was willing to sacrifice Isaac at God’s command. Abraham built altars wherever we went and worshiped God regularly, interceded for others, and had a covenant relationship with God. God blessed Abraham by making him the father of many nations (Gen 17:4-5). He was granted the land of Canaan for his descendants and was assured that his offspring will multiply as numerous as the stars in the sky. God fulfilled His promise through the birth of Isaac and the establishment of His great nation— Israel.

KING DAVID— A GREAT WARRIOR, PSALMIST AND A MAN AFTER GOD’S HEART

David demonstrated great faith in God by trusting Him in battles for the people of Israel, like defeating Goliath and many other nations (1 Sam 17:45-47). He was known for his deep worship, writing many Psalms, and sought to obey God’s will, even when it meant sparing the life of King Saul (1 Sam 24:6-7). Despite his flaws, David walked with God through a life of faith, worship, obedience, repentance, and a heart devoted to the Lord. God described him as “a man after My own heart” (1 Sam 13:14). He blessed David by establishing his kingdom and ensuring its stability. He also made a covenant with David, promising that his descendants would continue to rule Israel and that his kingdom would be established forever through the line of Christ.

APOSTLE PAUL— A BONDSERVANT OF CHRIST

Paul walked with God through radical faith, obedience to God’s calling, and a deep commitment to prayer and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. He dedicated his life to preaching the gospel to the gentiles with power and authority, and he endured persecutions. Paul remained humble, dependent on God’s grace, and focused on building up the church while keeping an eternal perspective (Acts 9:1-19). Paul’s letters became foundational teachings for the early church and are crucial parts of the New Testament. Through his commitment and obedience, Paul significantly advanced the Christian faith and left a lasting spiritual legacy. He fought a good fight, finished the race and kept the faith (2 Tim 4:7).

All these men were ordinary people like us. They were not perfect but their lives were marked by faith, obedience, and a deep desire to do God’s will. Based on their lives we see that those who walk with God, do His will and seek Him with all their hearts will be rewarded. May we be inspired to pursue a life of faith and righteousness.
