FREEDOM IN CHRIST

So if the Son of God sets you free, you are truly free.
John 8:36

Imagine breaking free from heavy chains and stepping into a world of liberation and joy, this is what freedom in Christ feels like. Christ sets us free from the bondage of sin and legalism through His death and resurrection. Let us explore what true liberation found in Christ offers to those who believe.

HOW WE ARE SET FREE

The death and resurrection of Christ is the ultimate victory over sin and death, granting us true freedom. We are liberated from the bondage of sin and legalism through faith in Christ. We have freedom from sin, not freedom to sin. In Christ, we are no longer under the power and penalty of sin, and we don’t have to earn our way to God. However, this freedom does not give us license to live without restraints; while we have the freedom to do all things, not everything is beneficial (1 Cor 10:23). True freedom isn’t found in doing as we please, as pursuing our own desires without boundaries leads to bondage.

WE ARE SET FREE FROM:

  • Sin: Believers are freed from the power and penalty of sin (Rom 8:2). Upon salvation, we receive new life and leave behind our old life dominated by sin. With our new life in Christ, we are empowered to live a life of righteousness, no longer bound by sin’s power.
  • The Law: Believers are no longer bound to follow the law for their salvation; instead, they are justified by their faith in Christ alone. Consequently, we no longer live under the law but under the grace of God (Rom 6:14; Gal 3:13). Now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus (Rom 8:17).
  • The kingdom of darkness: God has rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred us into the Kingdom of His dear Son, who purchased our freedom and forgave our sins (Col 1:13-14).

WE ARE SET FREE TO:

  • Worship God: We are free to worship God in spirit and truth (John 4:24). God has brought us out of darkness into His glorious light that we may proclaim and display the goodness of God. (1 Pet 2:9).
  • Live a righteous life: Once we are born again, we are free to live a righteous life and our will begins to align with God’s will (Rom 6‬:‭18).
  • Serve others in love: Our freedom isn’t about satisfying our flesh; it’s about serving others in love (Gal 5:13). Thus fulfilling Christ’s command to love one another just as He has loved us.

Our freedom in Christ should not be taken lightly but cherished and guarded vigilantly. Christ has truly set us free; therefore let us abide by the truth to stay free, and not get tied up again in slavery to the law (Gal 5:1). May we lead lives that bring glory to God, having been liberated from the burdens of legalism and sin.
